Outcome

A controller review package linking balances and proposed adjustments to evidence, showing unresolved items and actual human dispositions. It does not post journals, close an ERP, issue statements or provide an audit opinion.

Before you begin

Gather the required inputs before starting. Keep missing information visible and follow each step’s review guidance before continuing.

  • MANUAL / EXTERNAL before step 1: the controller defines entity/period/framework, close timetable, material areas, user-approved thresholds, account/cycle owners, review authority and reporting deadline. Obtain authorised ledger/subledger exports, close checklists, bank/source records, reconciliation schedules, proposed entries/estimates, statement drafts and approved policies. Bank confirmations, counts, evidence collection and access approval occur externally.
  • Use fixed version references and a Period-End Close Evidence and Controller Review Record. Each Prompt-assisted step is read-only. Run only relevant account/entry items and record reasoned not-applicable decisions; do not manufacture a journal to complete a step. When corrections are authorised, humans execute them in approved systems and return dated evidence and revised balances before dependent review continues.
  • All F2 source Prompts must be separately owner-approved and Published before this Workflow can be published or imported publicly. Existing published sources are preserved. Normal tools are ChatGPT and Gemini as named by their source; no General AI label or implied automatic ledger access.

Ordered sequence

Workflow steps

Complete the steps in order. Review each result before carrying approved information into the next step. Some steps can run in Workplace; manual or external steps remain clearly identified.

  1. Step 1 Confirm close data and ledger completeness evidence

Review the supplied export population, cut-off and account mappings against approved source totals. Finance staff obtain missing evidence externally. Keep control design separate from evidence that a control operated; a written reconciliation policy is not a performed reconciliation.

    Prompt: Messy Dataset Audit Prompt

    Input for this step

Audit goal: Close data completeness for the defined entity/period Dataset materials: Ledger, subledger and source exports/profiles Data dictionary and schema: Chart of accounts, units and period definitions Join and key definitions: Account/item keys and mapping grain Constraints and policies: Permission, cut-off and no ledger changes Acceptance criteria: Approved totals, population and source-version checks

    Carry forward

Approved source index, totals and unresolved completeness/control issues. Route prepared account reconciliations to step 2.

    Review note

Data/account owner confirms the actual source perimeter and readable evidence. Missing material populations block the affected close area.

    Open prompt
  2. Step 2 Review reconciliations and unresolved differences

Review each relevant prepared reconciliation using the source Prompt. Consolidate open differences without netting unrelated accounts. Obtain evidence manually; proposed fixes are not posted fixes.

Prompt: Review an Account Reconciliation and Its Unresolved Differences

    Input for this step

Account and period context: Account/entity/period/currency and close context Reconciliation and source evidence: Prepared bridge, ledger, source balances and item evidence Matching rules and accounting policies: Approved matching, cut-off and policy rules Review limits and decision owners: Controller thresholds, owners and no posting authority

    Carry forward

Item-level reconciliation review, signed residuals and evidence requests. Proposed adjustments go to step 3 with their original support.

    Review note

Account reviewer distinguishes supported timing items from errors or unexplained residuals. Controller decides escalation; totals agreeing does not authorise clearance.

    Open prompt
  3. Step 3 Challenge journals, accruals and estimate evidence

Review only actual proposed/recorded entries or estimates in scope. Keep occurrence, measurement, policy and approval separate. MANUAL / EXTERNAL: an authorised accountant decides treatment; authorised staff post/reverse only if independently approved, then supply updated records.

Prompt: Challenge a Journal, Accrual or Accounting Estimate Evidence Pack

    Input for this step

Accounting decision and reporting context: Entry/estimate purpose, entity and period Proposed entry or estimate evidence: Proposal, calculation, event evidence and contradictions Applicable framework and policy excerpts: Applicable framework/edition and supplied policy/excerpts Review authority and uncertainty limits: Accounting approver, uncertainty, review and posting limits

    Carry forward

Entry/estimate review and actual human disposition; for any executed correction provide posting reference, revised balances and rechecked reconciliation. Open proposals remain flagged.

    Review note

Qualified accounting owner resolves material treatment questions. Never infer posted/approved status from a prepared journal or intended reversal.

    Open prompt
  4. Step 4 Tie reporting schedules and statement evidence

Use the authorised post-adjustment version only when actual posting evidence exists; otherwise identify the package as pre-adjustment/provisional. Review schedules, statements, notes and supplied policy/disclosure assertions. Do not issue a compliance conclusion.

Prompt: Review Financial Statement Tie-Outs and Policy/Disclosure Evidence

    Input for this step

Reporting package and applicability context: Reporting entity, period, package version and adoption basis Statements schedules and approved source records: Readable statements, notes, schedules and approved underlying balances Supplied policies and disclosure requirements: Supplied applicable requirements, policies and accountant applicability rationale Review scope approvals and known differences: Known differences, review scope, release authority and approvals

    Carry forward

Tie-out and requirement/evidence maps, version conflicts and unresolved reporting questions. Transfer comparable financial tables to step 5.

    Review note

Accountant confirms applicable basis and technical decisions. Missing authoritative requirements limit the review; no guessed disclosure checklist.

    Open prompt
  5. Step 5 Investigate material variances and unusual movements

Investigate selected material finance KPIs using reconciled close data and approved comparatives. Distinguish economic, timing, classification and model effects, and record competing explanations. Use actual evidence, not a target narrative.

Prompt: Evidence-Grounded Spreadsheet KPI Variance Investigation

    Input for this step

Spreadsheet data: Reviewed close and comparative tables Primary KPI: Selected material balance or performance KPI KPI definition: Approved KPI calculation and recognition basis Current period: Close period Comparison period: Approved prior/budget comparison Spreadsheet schema and grain: Account/entity/product grain and currency Segments and filters: Authorised breakdowns Target or threshold: Controller review threshold Known data issues: Open source/report defects Business events: Documented business events Audience: Controller/finance audience Follow-up data sources: Outstanding evidence requests Decision context: Close or reporting claim affected Data handling constraints: Approved data minimisation and provider constraints

    Carry forward

Evidence-linked variance bridge, unexplained residual and proposed commentary. Combine with account/entry/report reviews in step 6.

    Review note

Finance reviewer checks arithmetic, period comparability and whether explanations exceed evidence; unresolved items remain in the controller pack.

    Open prompt
  6. Step 6 Prepare the controller evidence and exception pack

Assemble the close status from the prior reviews and actual external actions. Cover AP/AR, payroll, inventory, fixed assets, cash and other scoped cycles without pretending all are complete. Identify missing evidence, SoD/override concerns, late changes and schedule dependencies. Do not substitute audit sampling or W44 for finance-owned review.

Prompt: Month-End Close Evidence and Variance Review Pack

    Input for this step

Close period and reporting entity: Approved close entity and period Financial statements, trial balance, management reports, or reporting pack: Current reviewed statement/TB/report versions Reconciliations, subledger reports, and supporting schedules: Reviewed reconciliations, source totals and schedules Variance thresholds, materiality rules, and review criteria: Controller-supplied thresholds and criteria Known issues, late entries, open items, and post-close risks: All open differences, estimates, late entries and risks Account owners, reviewers, approvers, and backup owners: Actual preparers, reviewers and authorisers Supporting evidence, source documents, GL extracts, and audit trail: Evidence IDs and real posting/recalculation records Approval workflow, close calendar, and signoff status: Close calendar and actual signoff status Reporting deadline, board deadline, audit deadline, or management review date: Reporting deadline Accounting policies, judgment areas, estimates, and disclosure considerations: Supplied policies, technical handoffs and disclosure issues

    Carry forward

Draft controller pack: area status, evidence, open amount, review question, management response, proposed action and actual/pending human disposition. Preserve exceptions for final review.

    Review note

Controller checks completeness of scope and evidence, not just task-count completion. A claimed control needs dated operating evidence; management acceptance does not make missing evidence exist.

    Open prompt
  7. Step 7 Verify AI claims and record controller disposition

Check AI-generated summaries against original records and actual reviews. MANUAL / EXTERNAL afterwards: controller records affected release/hold decisions and follow-up; authorised staff separately close ERP or issue reports if permitted. Do not let this Prompt issue financial statements or an audit opinion.

Prompt: Evidence-Grounded AI Output Verification and Release Gate

    Input for this step

Decision context and risk level: Controller close/reporting decision and risk AI-generated content: AI-generated pack commentary and proposed conclusions Source and evidence bundle: Original balances, reviews and actual approval/action evidence Acceptance criteria: Traceable claims, visible unresolved matters and bounded language Authorized verification scope: Read-only supplied-record verification; no posting or release Known constraints and reviewer notes: Accounting review, confidentiality and outstanding technical questions

    Carry forward

Claim verification record and separately captured controller decision, unresolved-item register, owners and follow-up. Pending controller decision remains pending.

    Review note

Controller decides reliance and release with appropriate technical review. No AI signature, autonomous close or invented approval. Keep statement issuance and system changes outside Amo.ng generation.

    Open prompt

Completion criteria

Every in-scope close area has source and review status; reconciliations/entries/reporting ties and variances are traceable; unresolved material differences, controls and approvals remain visible; no completed action is claimed without evidence. AI-output verification and controller disposition are separate. The controller records release/hold/revise decisions, responsible owners and follow-up. ERP close, posting and statement issuance remain separately authorised external actions.
